In this tutorial you will ban or silence a member in Jetonomy, and learn how to lift the ban again. You need the free Jetonomy plugin, and an administrator account. It takes about three minutes. There are five steps. Open Users. Choose the type of ban. Set how long, and why. Use the Silence shortcut. Then lift a ban. Step one. Open Users. In your WordPress admin, open Jetonomy, then Users. Every member of your community is listed here. Point at a member, and five links appear under the username. Ban, Silence and Ban IP address are the last three. Step two. Choose the type of ban. Click Ban under the member. The Ban User dialog opens, with Type set to Global Ban. A member under a Global Ban cannot sign in to your site at all, and is refused everywhere in the community. Silence is milder. A silenced member can still sign in and read, but cannot post, reply, vote or report. Administrators also get a third type, IP address ban. Jetonomy does not record addresses, so you copy it from your server logs. It blocks that address for everyone using it, signed in or not. A ban from a single space is not made here. It is made from that space, on its own Members page. Step three. Set how long, and why. Duration starts on Permanent, which lasts until you lift it. The other choices are one day, seven days and thirty days. A timed ban ends by itself. You do not have to remember to remove it. Reason is optional. Type a short note, so you and other moderators know later why this was done. The Ban User button applies it at once. Cancel closes the dialog and changes nothing. Step four. Use the Silence shortcut. For a member who needs to cool down, click Silence under their name instead. The same dialog opens, already set to Silence for seven days, and its button reads Silence User. Change either one if you want, add a reason, and click Silence User. Step five. Lift a ban. Open Jetonomy, then Moderation, and click the Banned Users tab. It lists every ban and silence that is still running. Each row shows the member, the type, your reason, how long is left, and who issued it. This member is silenced, with four weeks to go. To end it early, click Lift restriction on that row and confirm. The member can take part again straight away. That is all five. Users opened, the type of ban chosen, the length and the reason set, the Silence shortcut used, and a ban lifted. You can now stop one member from posting without touching anyone else.
