If you want zero maintenance and you are happy for the community to live on someone else’s domain under their terms, a hosted platform will get you running faster and you should use one. The trade is real and it goes both ways: you rent convenience, and you pay for it monthly in a bill that grows with your membership.
This is the other side of that trade. You run WordPress, you keep the archive and the search traffic it earns, and the cost does not move when a thousand more people join. If you already run a WordPress site, most of the maintenance argument against self-hosting has already been paid for.

How is this different from bbPress?

Do I have to move my community off my site to get modern features?
No, and that is the point of it. Hosted forum platforms give you a good product on someone else's domain, with a monthly bill that grows with your membership. This runs on the WordPress site you already own, so the archive, the members and the SEO value stay with you.
Is there a per-member fee?
No. It is a WordPress plugin on your own hosting, so the cost does not scale with how many people join. That is usually the whole argument against a hosted forum once a community starts working.
Can I migrate an existing forum into it?
There is a migration section in the documentation covering how existing content comes across. Worth reading before you commit, and worth testing on a staging copy rather than production, as with any migration.
