What is a discussion forum? It is a website where people post topics, and other people reply. Every topic gets its own page. The replies stay under it. And anyone can find it later by searching. Most groups talk in a chat app. It is fast, and by tomorrow everything has scrolled away. Or in the comments of a social page, where the platform decides who sees what. So the same question gets asked every week, because nobody can find last week's answer. Here is how a forum works. Someone asks a question, and it becomes a page. People who know the subject answer underneath. The best answer is marked, so nobody has to read the whole thread. And months later, a stranger with the same question finds it through a search. A forum fixes that, and it comes in four shapes. Open discussion. Questions and answers. An ideas board that people vote on. And announcements. Who runs one? Software companies, for support. Clubs, for their hobby. Schools, for their students. Companies, for their own staff. Local groups. And brands, for their customers. Here is a real one. A running club asks which shoes to wear on wet rock. Two members answer. The person who asked marks the best one, and from then on, that answer is one search away. A company runs the same thing as a help desk. Each question is asked once, and answered in the open. Ideas get their own board, where members vote for what they want next. And the forum has a home page, with a space for every subject. For the person who runs it, a forum pays back in three ways. Every answer keeps working long after it was written. Search engines read each topic, so new visitors keep arriving without an advert. And the people, the answers and the reputation all build up on your own website. The owner sets up the spaces, and decides who can post in each one. And you stay in charge. When a member reports a reply, it lands in one queue, for you or a moderator to decide. Put the two side by side. A chat is gone by tomorrow. A forum topic is findable for years. A chat is one endless stream. A forum gives every topic a page, so a question is answered once. And a chat lives on someone else's app. A forum lives on your website, where search engines keep sending you new visitors. Every answer your community writes in a chat is thrown away. In a forum, each one keeps working for you. Jetonomy is the free forum plugin for WordPress. Start your forum this week, on the site you already own. Get Jetonomy. The link is below.
