Visible goals beat invisible points
Reputation points and trust levels work, but members never see them, so they never chase them. A badge is different. It has a name, an icon, and a tier, and it sits on a member’s profile where everyone can see it. A “100 Posts” badge tells the community this person is active. A “Top Answerer” badge signals expertise at a glance. That visibility is what turns a lurker into a contributor, because now there is a concrete thing to aim for.
You design each badge yourself. Give it a name, a one-sentence description of how to earn it, an icon, and a tier of Bronze, Silver, or Gold. The tier sets the border color on the profile, from warm bronze for entry-level milestones up to bright gold for elite ones. Tiers are visual only, so a gold badge looks impressive without touching anyone’s permissions or trust level.
Two ways to award, no busywork either way
Most badges should award themselves. Pick from built-in criteria, total posts, accepted answers, total replies, upvotes received, days active, reputation points, trust level, or spaces joined, set a threshold for each, and combine them with all or any. From then on the badge grants automatically when a member crosses the line. Evaluation runs on a recurring job every 6 hours plus event-driven re-checks when the relevant activity changes, so there is nothing to trigger by hand.
Some recognition is a judgment call, though. “Staff Pick”, “Most Helpful in July”, and “Community Founder” are not thresholds. For those, leave the auto-award criteria blank and award the badge manually from the Badges screen. The member gets a notification right away and the badge appears on their profile.
Recognition that spreads through the community
Badges do their job by being seen. They live in a dedicated section on member profiles, so anyone who opens a member’s profile sees what they have achieved.
Everything is manageable over the REST API too, so you can create, edit, and award badges from your own tooling when a badge should be part of a larger workflow.
